Film Review by POP's Julia DeKorte - Barbie

Spoiler Alert if You Read Entire Review

Julia DeKorte.jpg

The widely anticipated live-action Barbie movie was released on July 21, 2023, and has been a smash hit. Grossing over $774 million worldwide so far, Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken have led Barbie to be the third-highest grossing film of 2023. The film was directed by Greta Gerwig, written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, produced by David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerly, and Robbie Brenner, and of course, based on America’s favorite doll, Mattel’s Barbie.

Barbie lives in Barbieland with all the other Barbies and Kens. Barbieland is a matriarchal society, where Barbies hold all the ...   Fast forward to end of review...

With such high expectations set ahead of its release Barbie had a lot to live up to, but it absolutely succeeded. The film featured a wonderful inclusion of Ruth Handler and her dreams and visions for Barbie. It was funny, visually gorgeous, and entertaining. The cast was incredible, with America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, and Dua Lipa starring alongside Robbie and Gosling. And while it was fun to watch and hilarious, it also passed along messages of feminism and the impossibly high expectations of womanhood. Fun for any viewer of any age and interest, Barbie is a wonderful showing of all parties involved and the perfect movie to watch with family, friends, or any inspiring woman you know. READ MORE...

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow.png

Calling all video game lovers and book lovers! Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, named the best book of 2022 by Amazon, is a touching story starring two longtime friends who make a business out of creating and designing video games together. Sam Masur and Sadie Green’s friendship began at the same time their love for video games did. Though they fell out of touch in their teenaged years, they are reunited in their late college years in the 1990s, and before they graduate they have produced a smash hit video game: Ichigo. Spanning over 30 years and telling tales of friendship, love, failure, disability, fame, and heartbreaking tragedy, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow tells a uniquely captivating story.

Sam and Sadie meet in the game room of a hospital: Sam has been hospitalized for months due to an intense injury to his left foot that leaves him disabled for the rest of his life, and Sadie’s older sister has cancer, so Sadie finds herself in the hospital on a daily basis, looking for something to do. The two find one another and end up playing video games together for hours, for weeks and weeks and weeks. They grew apart after an emotional fight, but when Sam spotted Sadie in a crowded train station over a decade later, the friendship is rekindled.

After learning that one another are still passionate about video games and a lot of convincing from Sam, the two team up to create a video game of their own: Ichigo.     READ MORE...

Paul Reubens, the actor best known for portraying Pee-wee Herman, died Sunday night after a private bout of cancer. He was 70.

“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” wrote Reubens in a statement posted to Instagram after his death. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” wrote Reubens’ estate in the caption. “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Reubens began his career in the 1970s after joining the Los Angeles live comedy troupe the Groundlings as an improvisational comedian and stage actor. In 1980, he launched “The Pee-wee Herman Show,” a stage production centered on a fictional character he had been developing for years. As Pee-wee became a beloved comic figure, Reubens’ show ran for five sold-out months, and he landed a special at HBO. Reubens also committed to the character in his interviews and public appearances.

In 1985, he teamed with Tim Burton on “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” the character’s feature film debut, which was a critical and commercial success. Reubens returned three years later for a follow-up film, “Big Top Pee-wee,” helmed by Randal Kleiser.
