Nobody Really ever Leaves the Toy Business, Announcing PICKLE EVERYTHING

2023 TAGIE Awards Jeffrey Breslow presenting Jill Barad the TAGIE Lifetime Achievement Awa
jeffrey breslow book a game makers life.jpg

At the TAGIE awards last month I was honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Awards to my BMT partner Rouben Terzian and Mattel’s Jill Barad.  Tim Kilpin’s wonderful keynote talk included the line “nobody really ever leaves the toy business.” His words had me smiling to myself because after 41 years as a toy and game designer and 15 years as a full-time sculptor I was again somewhat to my surprise back!

What brought me back to the toy industry? My card game invention titled PICKLE EVERYTHING, “the best card game ever” (in my opinion). Why? Because it is easy to learn and play and hysterical.  It was inspired by Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the United States, with over 50 million players.

To play this card game you don’t need a court or any knowledge of Pickleball.  You need players who want to laugh, love word games and are competitive.

Frank Adler, formerly President of Uncle Milton Toys and an avid Pickleball player and I have started a new company to share the fun with the world.  And... there will be many more toys and games, but you will have to wait! But not for long!

After I retired I wrote a book about my life to share with my family. I'd like to share a part of it with you. It’s easy to talk about my successes, but my failures were many. And my biggest screw-up was legendary!  READ MORE...

The Transition to the Game World from Public Art and Inventing Interactive Site-Responsive Sculptures

Scott Constable .JPG

I am somewhat new to game design and just attended my first CHITAG/POP pitch event. I’m entering the world of games and toys from a career as an artist working mostly in the public realm, making site-specific, site-responsive, permanent and temporary projects in cities across the US for over twenty years (www.thewowhaus.com). So, I have loads of experience inventing within strict parameters and making pitches in competitive environments, and am tempered by rejection as much as I am fueled by success as an artist working in the public realm.

I began inventing games during the lockdown in the early stages of the pandemic. I also wrote and illustrated a children’s picture book that had been floating around in my head for years (I’m still looking into publishing options). Our work in public art mostly dried up during the pandemic and I found myself with spare time on my hands for the first time in my adult life. I have always enjoyed having creative challenges and complex problems to solve, but rarely had the opportunity to generate my own assignments. I’ve also always loved how games bring people together in convivial ways, sometimes in collaboration and sometimes in competition, but always leading to conversation and positive interaction, much like how our public art projects function. I’ve always especially loved strategy games and realize how they have taught me about complex problem solving and have informed my approach to design in general. I decided to try my hand at inventing abstract strategy games and began to think of the tabletop as a new kind of ‘public space’. I would adapt the skills I have developed inventing large scale interactive sculptures to a small scale, portable medium. READ MORE...

In their zeal to earn goodwill and customers, a few of these institutions even minted some rather creative banknotes. These bills didn’t feature the chiseled...

RIP - Rest in Play - Remembering Those that have Passed

If you know of a colleague's passing, please send us information so we may share with our readers. Archives can be found HERE

Marlene Flumerfelt (the following is from Kirsten Anderson) - Dec 9th we had a beautiful celebration of life/funeral for Marlene Flumerfelt who we lost far too soon and suddenly. There were many people who knew and loved our dear friend Marleen that weren't aware of her passing or couldn't make it.  Marleen was a generous soul who was continuously helping others and a famous fixture in the hashtag#Tsawwassen/Delta community for decades as "the toy lady" owner and founder (1993) of the community toy store Toys & Tech (more toys than tech).

Marleen has been an integral part of our T.O.Y.S. forever friends foursome for 25 years! In 1997 we cheekily called ourselves the T.O.Y.S - Totally Outrageous Young Successes. What started out as a buying group pretty much immediately turned into a deep and lasting friendship.

We shared many and regular travels, adventures, laughs, mischief, milestones, joys and sorrows. Dancing at Toy Fairs in TO & NY and ASTRA events. A Marlene shaped hole will remain in our hearts always.

He graduated from Hofstra University.  He is a 40+ year veteran of the toy biz. An industry he loved. Mark started working at Times Square Stores then Enchanted Village where he met his dear wife, Monica. Then, Jamesway where he achieved the position of merchandise manager. He moved on to Ames where he achieved the position of VP of merchandise. A big hearted man, LOYAL to those few close to him and to those who reported to him. A tough exterior with a soft heart. He was a Big Yankee’s fan. He named his two cats Derek and Jeter. He leaves his wife Monica, 2 daughters and a sister.
